What's Open, What's Next: Downtown Walnut Creek's Summer Reset

What's Open, What's Next: Downtown Walnut Creek's Summer Reset

Five years ago the conversation about downtown Walnut Creek was about what had left. Neiman Marcus, PG&E's customer service office, Extreme Pizza, Skipolini's, Fuego Tequila Grill, Genova Deli, Oyama Sushi after nearly thirteen years. Every empty storefront on Locust and North Main told the same story.

Walk the same blocks this July and the story has flipped. The operators filling those addresses are not testing the market. Several are names that, until recently, required a drive into San Francisco. For residents, that shift has a practical consequence: a weeknight downtown now holds together without leaving town.

The vacancies that defined five years are being reclaimed

The clearest way to see what has changed is to look at who is moving into spaces that sat empty. Stereo41 took over a long-vacant PG&E office. Doppio Zero moved into a space a previous Italian restaurant had left behind. Across downtown, buildings that once sat empty or turned over are being reclaimed for ambitious food and drink.

Former tenant Address New occupant Status
PG&E customer service office 1535 Bonanza St Stereo41 Open since Nov 2025
Extreme Pizza Cypress St Marufuku Ramen Just opened
Fuego Tequila Grill 1359 Locust St Taqueria Extra & Cantina Open
Vineyard Vines 1500 Mt. Diablo Blvd Bacio di Latte (gelato) Expected September
Neiman Marcus 1401 Mt. Diablo Blvd RH Gallery compound Lease signed Jan 2026
PRIMA N. Main St Doppio Zero Open
Skipolini's Pizza 1501 N. Broadway Ruby Lou's Open early 2026

The RH deal is the most consequential of the group. A single lease resolving a five-year anchor vacancy is exactly what the RH Gallery deal does. In January 2026, RH signed a lease for the former Neiman Marcus building at 1401 Mt. Diablo Boulevard. As confirmed by the City of Walnut Creek, the planned compound will span 50,000 square feet across two buildings, with a 30-foot-high glass atrium garden restaurant, fireplaces, fountains, and an outdoor wine experience. That build-out is not a 2026 opening, but the lease itself closes a chapter the downtown had been stuck in.

What just opened, block by block

North Italia, 1179 Locust Street

The Plaza Escuela opening is the one most residents will already have noticed. The new restaurant marks North Italia's first in Northern California and the San Francisco Bay Area, as well as its seventh within the Golden State. Located within Plaza Escuela at 1179 Locust St., North Italia Walnut Creek is situated in the popular open-air mall. Occupying over 8,500 sq. ft., the dining room and al fresco bar comfortably seats over 200 guests.

Site selection at this scale is not a coincidence. It is the kind of restaurant a national group only places where it expects a reliable, well-heeled crowd. Doppio Zero brought Neapolitan-style pizza into the former PRIMA space on North Main Street. These are brands that do meticulous site selection, and their arrival is a vote of confidence in local spending and foot traffic.

Marufuku Ramen, Cypress Street

The ramen operator most locals would associate with a trip to Japantown is now a downtown walk. Marufuku Ramen is coming to Cypress Street from founder Eiichi Mochizuki, whose brand began in San Francisco's Japantown in 2017 and specializes in Hakata-style pork tonkotsu. Marufuku Ramen would be coming to downtown Walnut Creek where Extreme Pizza used to be, and they have now opened as of yesterday.

Stereo41, 1535 Bonanza Street

The building most residents remember as PG&E has been unrecognizable for months. Stereo41 took the former PG&E customer service office at 1535 Bonanza Street, a freestanding brick building that had sat empty for years after PG&E vacated, and rebuilt it as a music-first dining venue with a dedicated DJ booth, a hi-fi sound system, two outdoor patios, and a Contemporary American menu. The team behind it, Victor Abu-Ghaben and his sister Sofia Hanan, already operated LITA and World Famous Hot Boys in Walnut Creek. They were not testing this market. They knew exactly who they were building for. It opened in November 2025.

Ruby Lou's, 1501 N. Broadway

Where Skipolini's used to be, there is now a cocktail bar with a children's ice cream counter attached. It reads odd on paper and works in person. Ruby Lou's opened in early 2026 at 1501 N. Broadway. Its founder, Megan Abraham Benshalom, came out of the View Lounge at San Francisco's Marriott Marquis with two decades of professional mixology behind her. She built a family-and-adult hybrid, a craft cocktail bar with Oreo-shaped stools and an ice cream bar for kids, because she saw a specific need when Skipolini's pizza closed in May 2025.

MIXT, 1105 S. California Boulevard

The newest of the group by a week. California-based fast casual chain MIXT, known for its health-focused offerings, prepares to launch its 21st outlet in Walnut Creek. The newest location will open July 14, 2026. MIXT is expanding its Bay Area footprint with a new location at 1105 S. California Boulevard in Walnut Creek.

Milky Flakes, 1399 N. Main Street

The ice cream count downtown has crossed into territory that even the local food bloggers find funny. Milky Flakes appears to be an ice cream shop headed to downtown Walnut Creek, which would bring the area to an unbelievable eight ice cream spots, plus one frozen yogurt shop. Ice cream shop Milky Flakes has now opened. In addition to soft scoops which interestingly, is in containers that automatically rotate every so often, they also offer a Korean shaved ice cream dish called Bingsu, as well as soft serve in Hokkaido milk and matcha flavors.

Taqueria Extra & Cantina, 1359 Locust Street

Relocated within downtown into the former Fuego space, per local coverage from July 15, 2026. The Locust address puts it a two-minute walk from North Italia and the Wednesday festival footprint.

Still on the calendar

Three names are worth watching before fall.

Mensho Ramen, 1512 N. Main Street. Mensho is headed to 1512 North Main Street, from Tomoharu Shono, who grew up in Japan, began making his own tonkotsu broth in high school, and opened his first ramen shop in Tokyo at twenty-five. Shono operates ramen concepts in Japan and abroad, and his approach is known for reaching beyond convention with ingredients like lamb, seafood, and matcha. In his words, "Ramen allows me to express an entire world within a single bowl." Combined with Marufuku's opening and the long-standing Ramen Hiroshi, downtown will hold three serious ramen kitchens on the same corridor.

Bacio di Latte, 1500 Mt. Diablo Boulevard. The former Vineyard Vines space in downtown Walnut Creek is getting a much sweeter replacement. Bacio di Latte, an Italian gelato shop, is expected to open in September, bringing gelato, espresso, and a Bacio Affogato Bar to the busy downtown corner.

Sala Mediterranean Grill, 1348 Broadway Plaza. A quieter fast-casual arrival with a February target that the local food press has been watching but has yet to see fully staffed.

Not everything announced arrives on time. The Foundry, a planned 24,000-square-foot European-style food hall from local restaurateur Brian Hirahara's BH Development, with a soaring open-air courtyard, 23 vendor stalls, and a rooftop restaurant, has been in development since 2019. As of early 2026, construction has not started, and rising costs have been acknowledged as a challenge. The city's planning portal lists it as approved. Keep it on the radar, not on the calendar. Oceania, the Ghaben family's seafood concept on Bonanza Street, is on a realistic 2027 target while a redesign moves through city approval.

A Wednesday evening that did not exist last summer

The most useful thing about the last twelve months is not any single opening. It is that the addresses now cluster tightly enough to walk. On August 5, the calendar makes the case for itself.

Get ready for two unforgettable summer nights in downtown Walnut Creek. Locust Street Festival transforms downtown into a lively street party with live music, great food, local vendors, and fun around every corner. Wednesdays, July 8 and August 5, 5:00 to 8:30 PM. Admission is free with RSVP. Locust Street from Mt. Diablo Blvd to Civic Dr. and Cypress Street from California Blvd to N. Main St. The festival draws 3,000+ attendees at each event.

A suggested order for residents who want to make an evening of it:

  1. Start at 5:00 on Locust between Mt. Diablo and Civic. The festival footprint runs directly past North Italia's Plaza Escuela patio, so an early aperitivo works before the crowd thickens.
  2. Cut across to Cypress by 6:30 for Marufuku, which sits inside the festival's second street.
  3. End at Stereo41 on Bonanza, three blocks off the festival edge, when the outdoor stalls close at 8:30.

The July 8 edition already ran. August 5 is the one to plan around. Walnut Creek Oktoberfest follows September 25 and 26, with two days of live music, dancing, food, and beer and wine.

What this means for anyone paying attention

The through line is not that Walnut Creek got new restaurants. Every downtown gets new restaurants. The through line is who chose to open here and what buildings they chose. A wave of restaurant operators, several of them with San Francisco kitchens on their resumes, have opened or announced downtown Walnut Creek addresses. When you look at who is behind these places, a pattern starts to emerge that matters well beyond dinner reservations. When talented people bet their own money on a neighborhood, they are telling you something about where they think the momentum is.

For residents, the reward is immediate. A weeknight in early August now works within a six-block walking radius that would have required a car, a bridge, or both a year ago.

If you have owned in Walnut Creek for a while and are curious what this level of downtown activity is doing to your home's market position, Teri Carlisle & Alexandra Dierkx would be glad to prepare a complimentary home valuation with the current neighborhood context built in.
